HIGH SCHOOL

High School is built for students who want to go to College.
The teachings, especially mathematics teachings, whatever the section, are built in order to be assessed at the final exam but mainly to prepare to further studies.
10th grade will give the basis and a view of what will be studied the following two years. At the end students will have to choose a stream: literature, social sciences or sciences (physics, chemistry and maths).
11th & 12th grades are already specialized and aimed to give the knowledges necessary for long studies in the chosen stream.
The final exam is a knowledges assessment, not a competitive exam. It is to testify that a student has been engaged and learned all the necessary corresponding to its stream regarding further studies.
Students have to be engaged in their stream. The right choice is fundamental. Their involvement is a decisive factor of success.
Some topics can be repulsive or off-putting at first sight, especially in the Sciences stream, when a student is not really interested enough.
Autonomy at work is also very important.
10th Grade:

The curriculum for the 10th grade can be split in 3 parts:
  • calculus: concepts of functions, équations and inequalities, both from the graphic and algebraic views
  • geometry: vectors (new and difficult concept) and cartesian geometry
  • statistics and probabilities: descriptive statistics, simulations & fluctuations towards distributions of probabilities

The most part is directed towards functions and analysis.

Also students will be initiated to algorithms: principles and main commands (for, if … then … else, while) through problem solving.
That is there won't be a course. The idea is to use algorithms in order to find or conjecture solutions to a problem.

In fact problem solving, especially problems with concrete grounds, is a main characteristic of the curriculum whatever the domain studied.
Students will face the difficult task to translate a problem in mathematic terms.

10th grade is a decisive year. Students will get all the basis necessary for the pursuit of studies. It's a difficult year though.
11th & 12th Grades, terminal cycle:

As previously mentioned, two main goals for this cycle:
  • give the students the knowledges and the methods which will permit them to feel at ease in College or university.
  • preparation to the final exam

Literature stream:

There isn't a particular curriculum for the literature section anymore (it has been so until the last curriculum changes).

The willling students can choose as part of an extra-curriculum to follow maths teachings, which drives to an assessment at the final exam.

The curriculum is the one of the economic section.
Scientific stream (S):

The main stream ("L'enseignement spécifique") in 11th and 12th grades is about:
  • Calculus and analysis: the main part of the curriculum. Students will step by step go through the study of functions of one variable (derivatives, integrals, exponential and logarithm functions, equation solving, application to experimental sciences, optimisation…)
  • Sequences: principles and convergence
  • Induction principle
Statistics: we will add some common tools as standard deviation and go a bit further in simulations and estimations
  • Probabilities: we will study more complex situation and give the theoretical basis for discrete probabilities as well as we will introduce common distributions of probabilities binomial and gaussian mainly).
  • Vectorial and cartesian geometry: first in the plane in 11th grade, then in space in 12th grade
  • Complex numbers

During the 12th grade, students can choose to follow an extra curriculum course (spécialité).

Approximately two third of the curriculum is about arithmetic. It's difficult and demanding and surprising. Divisibility, prime numbers, congruences and theorems as Gauss's and Bezout's theorems.
Also we will study the basis of ciphering.
The last third is the introduction of matrices, computation with matrices and applications to sequences.
This part rests upon real life situations, called evolutive situations.
Economic & Social stream (ES):

The main stream ("L'enseignement spécifique") in 11th and 12th grades is about:
  • Calculus and analysis: the main part of the curriculum. Students will step by step go through the study of functions of one variable (derivatives, integrals, exponential and logarithm functions, equation solving, application to economy, optimisation…)
  • Sequences: principles, arithmetic and geometric sequences
  • Statistics: we will add some common tools as standard deviation and go a bit further in simulations and estimations
  • Probabilities: we will study more complex situation and give the theoretical basis for discrete probabilities as well as we will introduce common distributions of probabilities binomial and gaussian mainly).

During the 12th grade, students can choose to follow an extra curriculum course (spécialité).
Ils aborderont des notions de théorie des graphes et de matrices dans le but de traiter des problèmes concrets.
