12th Grade, Scientific section, Extra curriculum.
In French?
Overview:
The main purpose of this extra-curriculum is to introduce students 2 branches of mathematics which are not studied in the common curriculum but fundamentals in Maths: arithmetic and linear algebra.
Choosing this extra-curriculum is an important involvement as it is not an easy one, but very satisfying intellectually.
For the final exam, the global maths mark will be weighted 9 instead of 7 in the total.
This extra-curriculum is independent of the common curriculum.
Two third of the curriculum.
Arithmetic has a special place in mathematics. One of the oldest practice.
The purpose is to study integers, their properties and their consequences.
It is definitely one of the most surprising part of mathematics.
Students will have to develop special skills in searching and reasoning.
Solving arithmetic problems is not as repetitive in a way as in the common curriculum.
Arithmetic asks for intuition and inventiveness.
Finally it is nice to study more in depth at the end of high school, the numbers by which we started to learn maths in primary school.
We will study:
• Divisibility and prime numbers
• Euclidian division and modular arithmetic
• GCD and LCM
• Bezout’s theorem, Gauss’s theorem, and some others
• Cryptography

Fully new for the students: matrices.
• Principles
• Arithmetic operations: sum, product, power, inverse
• Sequences of matrices
• Applications of matrices: evolving processes, flows, fractals, …

Commentaires:
– The final exam is the same as for the common stream but one exercise corresponding to this extra-curriculum.
The number of exercises and the duration of the exam is the same as for the others.
– Students must be aware that there won’t be so much theoretical knowledges to learn by heart, but the course will be very challenging concerning reasoning and rigour.
Enjoy the school year.
